Conversations in our office lately have been about anti-aging and when is the right time to start. The consensus? It is never too early to start caring for our skin! In the spirit of “Kiasu-ism” (being very anxious about not missing an opportunity), we have come up with a list of habits to help us all win the race against time.
SUNSCREEN IS YOUR BEST FRIEND
Regardless of your age, you should always prep your skin with sunscreen every day! According to Deborah S. Sarnoff, Senior Vice President of The Skin Cancer Foundation, a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher will be sufficient to help reduce aging of the skin caused by sun damage. If you are skeptical about what UV rays do to your skin, here’s a video by Biore to show you the damage that occurs when you go sans sunscreen!
STOP PUFFING TO REGAIN RADIANCE
Attention to all smokers: Tobacco is one of the culprits that causes your skin to age prematurely. Chemicals in tobacco smoke damage collagen and elastin, which are essential to keep your skin firm and radiant.
A study conducted by researchers at the Department of Plastic Surgery at Case Western Reserve University, identified the impact of tobacco on our skin. The study featured twins who led different lifestyles and results of the study showed that smoking causes skin to age at an accelerated rate.
In our opinion, that means it’s time to think twice before lighting up your next cigarette!
YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT
According to Fitness magazine, the following foods do a great job at keeping your skin supple:
For Firming: Kale and Spinach
What it does: These vital veggies contain special phytonutrients, or antioxidant compounds, that help guard against damage caused by the sun.
For Radiant Skin: Pomegranates
What it does: This fruit is packed with vitamin C and help to increase your body's capacity to preserve collagen which will make your skin look smooth and supple.
For Diminishing Brown Spots: Green Tea
What it does: Green tea contains polyphenols (antioxidants that combat free-radical damage and may reverse the effects of aging).
Next time you head out for a meal, remember to keep a lookout for the ingredients!
YOUR HANDS & NECK NEED LOVE TOO
Many times we spend countless hours caring for our face but our hands and neck are also commonly exposed areas that require care too. When applying moisturizer for your face, remember to spare some for your hands and neck. The last thing we want is want a young looking face with wrinkled hands and neck. Yikes!
DRINKING FROM A STRAW CAN CAUSE WRINKLES
Love your post-lunch bubble tea or coffee? Unfortunately, we have some bad news: repetitive muscle motions such as sucking on a straw can cause wrinkles too. So if you ask us, we’d say, go for good ol’ H20 from your bottles instead – staying hydrated is always beneficial for your skin.
Now, some of you may be thinking “I’ve already had all these bad habits for years; it’s probably too late for me”. Rest assured that there is always a chance to return your skin the glow it deserves.
