Most times when we step into Chinese restaurants, we are greeted by floral prints, pastel tones and gold accents. To break out of the mould, Black Society ventured into the darker side of things, featuring black, plush interiors with gold trimmings at their restaurant, and pushing the boundaries of traditional Cantonese cuisine with their offering of creative dimsum and a modern take on familiar flavours.

We spoke to the folks at Black Society to find out the inspiration behind their brand, as well as what some of their must-have dishes are that sets them apart from other Chinese restaurants.

VivoCity: The name, “Black Society (黑社会)” is quite peculiar for a Chinese restaurant, especially since there is generally a negative connotation to it; is there a reason why the name was chosen?

Black Society: We wanted to break away from the norms of a traditional Chinese restaurant in all aspects, this meant thinking out of the box from our name to interior design, as well as the food that we serve.

Speaking of the food that Black Society serves, do share – what are some must-haves when we visit or for people who are stepping into your restaurant for the first time?

BS: One of our signature dishes since our opening in 2006 is our Xiao Long Bao in Lobster Bisque, which is definitely something that everyone should try when they come by. Some other fan favourites include our Crispy Aromatic Duck, Salted Egg Custard Lava Bun, D24 Durian Mochi, as well as creative dimsum.

Wow, Xiao Long Bao in Lobster Bisque sounds like a savoury heaven. You mentioned creative dimsum – how are they different from the usual dimsum that we’re familiar with?

BS: Our creative dimsum are handcrafted daily by our master chefs from Hong Kong, so you wouldn’t be able to find them anywhere else. We are also always putting out seasonal flavours such as mushroom buns and carrot dumplings so our diners can be sure that there will be something different to look forward to every time they visit.

We’re sure variety is always welcomed when it comes to food. Lastly, this one’s for our penny-pinchers – are there any tips on getting the most out of a meal at Black Society?

BS: Yes, we do. Especially for dimsum lovers, we offer a 30% discount on our full dimsum menu from Mondays to Saturdays, 2.30pm to 5pm.

Black Society is located at VivoCity #02-156, near Level 2 drop-off point.
