Singapore’s Junior Chefs Battle It Out at VivoCity

A showdown of culinary talent to find the island’s most promising young chefs


23 July 2013, Singapore – Sixty-seven children demonstrated their budding baking and creative flair over the weekend, at the Parents World ‘Junior Chef’ Competition 2013 which concluded on Sunday at VivoCity. Cheryl Tay Kai Xin, aged seven, and Agrawal Arushi aged nine, demonstrated their promising skills to win the Cake Decorating and Dessert Making competitions respectively.

Cheryl’s mother, Ms Rachel Hon said “We were pleasantly surprised that my daughter Cheryl came out tops, in this competition which has been great bonding time for our family this weekend. VivoCity has always been our favourite place to spend the weekend, be it for shopping, having a meal or enjoying the facilities such as the Sky Park at the mall.”

“When we first heard about this competition at VivoCity, we were really excited to take part as my daughter Arushi loves helping me out in the kitchen to cook and bake. The dish that she made is called Sandesh, which originates from East India (West Bengal State) and is created with homemade cottage cheese. Sandesh means news, and we share sweets with friends and family when we have good news. We were all delighted when we heard the good news that Arushi had won!” added Ms Sourabh Agrawal.

For the Cake Decorating competition, children aged five to eight transformed delicious cakes into stunning art pieces with the use of icing swirls, colourful fondant and adorable toppings. Children aged nine to 12 satisfied their sweet tooth craving with a delicious after-meal treat at the Dessert Making competition.

Both Cheryl Tay and Agrawal Arushi walked away with the top prize of $500 worth of kitchen appliances, vouchers, trophy and dinner for four at the newly opened Jamie’s Italian restaurant, while $300 and $200 worth of kitchen appliances, vouchers and a trophy were given out as second and third prices respectively.
