VivoCity, Harbourfront Centre and Alexandra Retail Centre to Share Their Green Commitment with Shoppers on Earth Day
A series of green initiatives will be launched by the malls to call on shoppers to make green living a part of their everyday lives

18 April 2012, Singapore – VivoCity, Singapore’s largest retail and lifestyle destination, HarbourFront Centre and Alexandra Retail Centre (ARC) will undertake a series of initiatives to spur a green movement among shoppers in conjunction with Earth Day this Sunday, 22 April 2012. The drive to raise shoppers’ awareness and unite them to do their part for sustainable living is part of the malls’ on-going commitment towards their green efforts.

On Earth Day, which brings communities worldwide together to increase awareness and appreciation of the Earth’s natural environment, the three malls, together with their participating tenants will do their part to conserve energy. On the day, the air-conditioning in all of the three malls will be increased by half to one degree Celsius and all water features will not be switched on to reduce energy consumption. Participating tenants [full list of participating tenants from each mall in Appendix A] from each of the three malls will also reduce their lighting within their stores. Some of the restaurants will adopt the use of candles placed on tables to compensate for the reduced indoor and outdoor lighting. Shoppers visiting these malls can be assured that their comfort and shopping experiences will not be compromised.

“We want to take this occasion to work together as a community and send a message that each one of us can do our part to promote a more sustainable life”, said Mr Chang Yeng Cheong, General Manager of VivoCity. “It’s not just a gesture. These initiatives undertaken by VivoCity, HarbourFront Centre and ARC all together become an experience that we hope our shoppers will not only remember but also practise. On top of that, for those spending their Sunday in any of the three malls, this would be an ideal moment for parents to share with their children why saving energy is important.”

In addition, shoppers who spend a minimum of $50 on 22 April 2012 will receive an environmentally-friendly shopping bag. Attractive shopping or dining vouchers will also be given to shoppers who are spotted using the bags in any of the three malls.

To enhance on-ground awareness on the promotions happening on Earth Day, VivoCity’s popular weekend roving performers, "Dancing Dolls" will carry placards with green messages. They will be roving through VivoCity to HarbourFront Centre at 4pm and 7pm on the day.

As part of a larger collaborative green effort, the three malls are also working together with other Mapletree properties that include HabourFront Towers One and Two, Mapletree Anson, Mapletree Business City and Merrill Lynch HarbourFront Bank of America, to collect recyclable materials. The recycled materials include paper, old corrugated boxes (carton boxes), plastic waste, aluminium cans, metal waste as well as glass bottles. To-date, 53,337kg of paper has been collected and this is approximately equivalent to saving 20,500 trees.

In its continuous effort towards supporting green causes, ARC will also be organising a Green Living Festival from 1 to 3 June 2012. The event aims to create awareness and educate the public as well as schools on how individuals can contribute to 'living green' at work, in school and also at home. There will be a sale of eco-green products and interactive activities for shoppers visiting the mall during the three-day event.
